TAITRA Start Exhibition Indoor Navigation Era

I found micro-solomo announces the computex 2014 iBeacon news

original post:
The “Computex Taipei" APP launched by TAITRA(Taiwan External Trade Development Council,TAITRA) used SAILStech positioning and navigation engine which seamlessly combined Apple’s latest micro-locating iBeacon technology and mobile phones integrated accelerometers, gyroscopes and electronic compass to precisely calculate users position (accuracy of less than two meters) in the exhibition hall. It must have been a long haul for TAITRA to launch an APP with the latest iBeacon technology, which is only introduced to market within a year. Except for global visitors and buyers will be able to find booths more efficiently, in the future, personal service can be added within the APP to make it possible to automatically obtain or exchange booths DM and cards which can help cut paper usage and contibute to energy saving and environment protection. TAITRA has started exhibition indoor positioning reign from Computex 2014 exhibition; more and more exhibitions will provide position-related APP in the future to offer visitors a more convenient service. Application fields are also numberless, such as galleries, museums , government agencies , libraries, hospitals, airports , train stations, transit , transfer stations , theme parks , shopping malls , community, parking lot .. etc.

Computex 2014 used SAILS Tech's iBeacon indoor GPS technology: global visitors to experience Taiwan high-tech

I found something interesting stuff in the internet. SAILS tech is the iBeacon and technology supplier in Computex 2014.

Computex 2014 used SAILS Tech's iBeacon indoor GPS technology: global visitors to experience Taiwan high-tech

One of the world's top three computer exhibition, Computex 2014 will be the first to use SAILStech indoor positioning technology. With the help of “Computex Taipei" APP, global visitors can freely look around in the exhibition halls without worrying of missing direction or unable to find the booths in their list. The APP launched by the Foreign Trade Association used SAILStech positioning and navigation engine which seamlessly combined Apple’s latest micro-locating iBeacon technology and mobile phones integrated accelerometers, gyroscopes and electronic compass to precisely calculate users position (accuracy of less than two meters) in the exhibition hall. Except for global visitors and buyers will be able to find booths more efficiently, in the future, personal service can be added within the APP to make it possible to automatically obtain or exchange booths DM and cards which can help cut paper usage and contibute to energy saving and environment protection. Due to GPS signals cannot be received in-door, it is unable to navigate in-door in the past. However, with the technology and devices improving, LBS (Location-Based Service) service based on WiFi and Bluetooth is becoming popular, creating a new wave of business opportunities. Application fields are also numberless, such as galleries, museums , government agencies , libraries, hospitals, airports , train stations, transit , transfer stations , theme parks , shopping malls , community, parking lot .. etc.

Computex 2014 Indoor Navi APP Public Test

Computex 2014 updated the App (Computex Taipei) and added iBeacon technology powered indoor positioning and navigating function. We did some test on the locating accuracy and interface to see what new features did the updated APP improved ie whether it is more user-friendly and easy to adopt.

The new interface used iOS7; it became cooler and neater; the previous version is too cluttered and with too many complicated sidebars making it difficult to use.

However, after actually using the App, the interface is not friendly. It took us a while to explore how to locate our position and motivate the navigation function. Here is how it works: you have to locate your position on the map first, then, you can type on the search bar your target booth. Then, a navigation route will come out (from your position to your target booth). Also, if we would be able to search for several booths and mark them before we locate our position, we would have love this APP. Because only this way can we continuously go to booths we are interested without doing the same searching steps for each booth. Also, if the routing path can disappear as we walk, the navigation experience will be a lot more simple. Plus, it should be able to re-navigate when we are not in the right track. These details would not affect the navigation function, but if it can be improved, the navigation experience can be more complete. The last but not the least is the APP sometimes flash backs; the APP definitely needed to be stabilized.

As for the result of locating and navigation test, the APP took about 2 minutes to locate our position on the map which is quite long. However, the accuracy is satisfying; the overall accuracy is about 1 to 3 meters. Plus, the direction indicator is correct. What's quite weird though is the performance of Android is a lot worse than iOS. Defects do not outweigh the merits. Computex Taipei providing such intimate indoor positioning service so visitors can find the vendors quickly and easily is to be encouraged.

Computex 2014 iBeacon Indoor Navi Experience Report

iBeacon technologies and applications are gradually becoming a trend that cannot be ignored. I went to Taiwan to attend the 2014 Computex and felt lucky to be able to personally experience the Computex's iBeacon locating and navigation service. Although indoor LBS APP is not new in the menu, and I have had many good LBS APP experiences in the US such as Meridian, Wifarer and other smaller indoor APPs, the indoor navigation experience at Computex Taiwan still has some interesting features that is worth sharing.

After Apple introduced iBeacon in 2013 WWDC, a flock of hardware vendors began offering iBeacon compatible hardwares in the market. However, I have not seen any large application until Computex 2014. I believe this the first large application of iBeacon in exhibitions. What’s incredible here is Computex actually made it come true within less than a year. The effort and resources devoted to this memorable milestone is definitely beyond imagination.

When experiencing the navigation in the hall, I started to think of the position of the beacons. Where did they attached it? I looked at the various stalls and guessed if they have placed the beacons on each booth; however, I did not see any suspicious hardware around the booths. Then something run into my mind “since it is not down in the booths, maybe it is attached on the ceiling?” I looked up and saw some white circular device that is uniformly about 3-5 meters away from each other. I know I found the beacons. However, looking at the density of the beacons, about 1~2 beacons cover a booth so there must be at least a thousand beacons attached up on the ceiling to be able to cover the whole floor. Also, I found that the middle part of the World Trade Center does not have ceiling, it is like an open courtyard (the only ceiling is 4th floor high);  not sure where did they put the beacons for this open area.

Although the locating speed is not very fast at the start (it takes about a minute to show my position on the map), the positioning accuracy is quite good compared to other LBS APP I have tried before. The visual error is about 2 meters. Another point that amazed me is the fluency of the change in position. It is very smooth and response immediately according to my behavior which indicate that they should have used combinations of inertial technology to improve positioning experience. I have to say that this experience is better than Meridian but I found that I have to hold the phone in a fixed position. If I waved or accidentally swung the phone, the position slightly deviate. One more impressing point about the experience is the heading, I can clearly see which direction I am facing. It is accurate enough to help determine the direction of the visitors. This is very handy for those have problem reading maps. I also tested the Android version and the result is not satisfying. It does not only take too long to locate my position at the beginning, the accuracy is also quite bad. Not sure why there is such big difference on the accuracy between iOS and Android. The map is also not user-friendly, hope it can be improved in the next event. Overall, I am very happy to have the chance to experience this technology.

I am quite curious which company’s solution did Computex 2014 used for according to my understanding, iBeacon mainly focus on proximity rather than positioning and navigating.

【Computex 2014】iBeacon’s First Public Test in Taiwan

To make it easier for participants to find their locations in the large exhibition halls, Apple’s iBeacon is adopted at the Computex Taipei this year as a substitution for GPS, which is not suitable to establish indoor locations. The use of iBeacon through mobile app may also be the first large-scale public application in Taiwan.
Let’s see how it works.

iBeacon works on Bluetooth Smart that can be found on Bluetooth 4.0 devices. It is not only possible to replace part of functions of the Near Field Communication (NFC), it also has several other applications such as replacing GPS as an indoor navigator.
Although iBeacon is created under the Apple trademark, Apple does not restrict the indoor proximity system to be used on Apple devices. Any Bluetooth 4.0 devices could connect iBeacon through an app.
Participants of Computex have to download “Computex Taipei” app and turn on bluetooth on their smartphones before accessing iBeacon technology, which supports iPhone, Android and Windows Phone.
ibeacon-test-2
According to our tests, it generally took at least five minutes to locate positions. Android phones even failed to find the locations sometimes with iBeacon. In addition, iBeacon’s base stations are only equipped in the exhibition space rather than the entire buildings. Take the Nangang Exhibition Hall, for example; participants were not able to locate positions in the external hallways and the third and fifth floors, which are outside the booth area.
In fact, the technology can also send push notifications of vendors, themes and contact information to iBeacon users in close proximity of booths. But it is a shame that it seems like this year’s Computex does not make good use of this function.
iBeacon-test
After locating a position, the direction iBeacon showed and the relative location that iBeacon provided was pretty accurate, which was only about two to three meters away from the target locations.
